Essay Andy Dufresne and Samuel Norton - 854 Words

People’s actions cannot only affect them but also the people around them. In Stephen King’s novella, â€Å"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,† Andy Dufresne was sent to Shawshank Penitentiary sentenced with two life sentences for murder, one for each of his victims. While serving his sentence he tries to continue his outside life by doing taxes and adding to his rock collection. As time goes by Andy was doing mostly everyone taxes in the prison, including Warden Samuel Norton. While Andy’s severing his time he later finds out who was the real murder of Andy’s wife and her lover. With this knowledge he asks the warden for another trail but the warden rejects his request because he wants Andy to stay in Shawshank and do his taxes for†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"You’re going back into solitary for that. 30 day. You will lose everything. Clear?† (71) Samuel Norton scolded this at Andy when he refused to continue with the taxes. He shows how cruel his is because he could easily take away everything that Andy worked very hard for. He could take away all of his privileges that he earned. He could also have him killed and simply tell the state that he had an accident. Also if Andy lost the protection Norton knows the cons would mostly like have a better chance of seriously injuring him or killing him. Norton also affected Andy with his short temper. Norton’s short temper affects Andy because if Andy gets out of line he will be paying big time. The smallest mistake could make him erupt with anger. â€Å"Don’t you ever mention money to me again, not in this office not anywhere. Alternative Energy Sources Free Essays

It is undeniable that global warming has been one of the most pressing issues facing the world today. Global warming is due to the greenhouse effect wherein greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide trap the sun’s heat in our atmosphere and prevent it from radiating back into space. However the issue of global warming is not about global warming. We will write a custom essay sample on Alternative Energy Sources or any similar topic only for you Order Now The greenhouse effect has been around for millions of years and is indeed responsible for the development of life as without it the earth would be too cold to support the variety of flora and fauna we see today. The issue of global warming has been accelerated global warming. The issue is how the rate of heating by the earth’s surface is proceeding at a much faster rate than mother nature can adapt to. If the predictions are correct, this will result in a multitude of changes. Environmental changes such as the rise in global sea levels due to the melting of the ice caps, an increase in the frequency of extreme weather due to changing precipitation patterns, and massive rates of extinction. These massive environmental effects also translate to massive economic effects especially in agriculture. Drought will affect the production of essential foodstuffs like grain especially in the equatorial regions. The retreat of glaciers will also affect farms which are dependent on glacier runoff for irrigation. Global warming will also strain government pockets as the need for preventive infrastructure like floodgates as well as for repair and reconstruction of old infrastructure which is damaged by the increased temperature variation. Increased health costs will also be a burden on social services. One of the key methods for mitigating the advance of global warming is by the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Some of the ways of reducing greenhouse gases include changing practices in agriculture, stopping deforestation, as well as restoring and conserving degraded land. Another way for reducing greenhouse gases is by switching our energy production from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Some renewable energy sources include solar power, wind power, hydrogen, and nuclear power. This paper discusses these alternative energy sources and the prospects for their use. Most of the energy needs of the United States comes from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels drive generators which provide electricity as well as engines that power our transportation. However, these fossil fuels are considered nonrenewable energy sources simply because these fossil fuels are of limited supply. Sooner or later, the world’s fossil fuel deposits will reach a point such that their extraction would not be economically feasible. Already, the huge demand for oil is pushing its price to record levels with each   passing year. As opposed to fossil fuel based energy sources, renewable energy comes from sources that wont run out in any anthropological time frame. Renewable sources such as wind or solar power come from sources which are constantly replenished, and will be constantly replenished barring major changes of geological or astronomical scale. As such, investments in renewable power is much more future proof. Because these renewable sources of energy wont run out, we can be sure that succeeding generations will be able to benefit from renewable energy sources we develop today. That much cannot be said for sources of energy from oil, gas and coal. How to cite Alternative Energy Sources, Papers Alternative Energy Sources Free Essays The consumption of natural resources has come to dominate the minds of policy-makers and general public in the US, given the limited range of these resources and concerns associated with the burden the growing population places on the reserves. The most obvious problem the US encounters in the realm of natural resources consumption is undeniably the consumption of energy resources. In addition to increasing the efficiency of oil production, the nation will sooner or later have to turn to alternative energy sources. We will write a custom essay sample on Alternative Energy Sources or any similar topic only for you Order Now While these sources still remain too expensive to be operational, their technology is undergoing rapid transformations to make them more cost-efficient. Wind mills are already effectively used in Spain where the climate is characterized by strong winds. Solar energy, geothermal power, tides, hydroelectric power plants – all these are ways to receive energy in a way that is less dangerous for the environment and can with time fully replace oil as a source of energy. Considering the dangers posed to the US society by the resource depletion, we will also try to look at alternative solutions that will enable us to replace the reserves. Current State Solar energy is attractive because the energy received by the earth annually exceeds the amount of energy used by humanity by 35,000 times, although â€Å"about 1/3 of this energy is either absorbed by the outer atmosphere or reflected back into space† (University of Utah). Geothermal energy that stems from the inner heat of the earth is of lesser importance as it can be used only to replace a small amount of human needs. The temperatures of 100 degrees Celsius are located only three miles away from the surface, which gives man an opportunity to use geothermal energy. Tidal facilities like the one operated by the former Soviet Union in Lumkara, use the power of the water â€Å"to fill reservoirs, which are then slowly discharged through electricity-producing turbines† (University of Utah). The attraction of tidal power, in contrast to solar and wind energy is its predictability and rich supply that can be calculated since it comes on a regular basis. In contrast, in the case of solar and wind energy, the industry often has to wait for days until the sun comes out or the wind begins to blow. However, the Survey of Energy Resources published by the World Energy Council in 2001 points to â€Å"long construction times, high capital intensity and low load factors† as preventing economic efficiency of this type of energy (World Energy Council). How to cite Alternative Energy Sources, Papers Alternative Energy Sources Free Essays The move to alternative energy sources is inevitable for most of the modern world. Reasons for the move include sheer economics, geopolitics and environmental protection. Through the years, the world has gotten used to using fossil fuels for their energy needs. We will write a custom essay sample on Alternative Energy Sources or any similar topic only for you Order Now Products derived from fossil fuels are used in transportation, in electricity generation, in petrochemicals and even in road construction. The primary reason for the move is the inadequacy of fossil fuels to meet future energy demands at an economically feasible price. Fossil fuels, due to their nature, are of finite supply. Even though no estimates show that the amount of fossil fuels in the Earth is not about to run out, economic forces will cut the fossil fuel supply even before it runs out. As the amount of fossil fuels extracted decreases, the greater the demand for it becomes, particularly because of rising economies. Economics will thus dictate that the price of fossil fuels go up due to shifts in global supply and demand. Sooner or later, the price of energy will rise to unsustainable prices – prices which can cripple economies and cause great financial problems for the common man due to inflation. Already, we have seen evidences of this scenario happening. The price of oil has risen continually over the years and has already sparked unrest in some countries. Alternative energy sources, especially renewable energy sources are clearly better in the long run. Renewable energy sources will not face the problems faced by rising oil prices today simply because these energy sources are not finite. Alternative energy sources like biomass, wind, hydro and solar energy will always be replenished. Moreover, these energy sources are also less polluting than fossil fuel sources. The use of fossil fuels has been linked to the phenomenon of anthropogenic global warming. Carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels are said to cause Earth’s temperature to rise abnormally – a situation which can have disastrous effects on a global scale if left unchecked. Renewable energy sources do not suffer from this drawback which makes them more attractive from an environmental perspective. Nuclear energy is also another alternative energy form. While it is not exactly renewable due to the finiteness of the Earth’s Uranium deposits, the high yield of nuclear energy means that the accessible Uranium in the Earth can last us for centuries before running out. Nuclear energy is clean, already available and can supply energy at a large scale. While there are concerns regarding its safety as well as what to do with spent nuclear waste, newer technologies have managed to reduce the dangers from these nuclear side effects. These make nuclear energy an attractive stopgap until the development of more advanced energy sources. In the pipeline are also some more futuristic energy options. Hydrogen power is a promising alternative to using oil products in transportation. Unlike oil combustion which releases pollutants into the air, the by-product of Hydrogen consumption is harmless water vapor. Lastly, Helium-3 fusion is an attractive solution which can potentially end all of Earth’s energy problems. Helium-3 fusion is a form of nuclear energy which utilizes Helium instead of Uranium and has no radioactive by products. References National Renewable Energy Laboratory – www.nrel.gov Schmitt, H. We will write a custom essay sample on Alternative Energy Sources or any similar topic only for you Order Now Moreover, the recent increase in oil prices has caused inflation due to higher transportation costs of the commodities. However, the biggest drawback of using the non-renewable sources of energy has been an increase in environmental pollution, and the phenomenon of global warming. When the fossil fuels are burnt by millions of vehicles on road, ships on water, and by aeroplanes in air, toxic emissions including deadly hydrocarbons, and lethal carbon monoxide are released into the atmosphere. These poisonous gases cause severe respiratory diseases, and cancer in the most vulnerable human population i. e. children and elderly. Is it beneficial to continue the use of fossil fuels whose emissions cause deadly diseases in humans? Also, one of the emissions is carbon dioxide, which is the main cause of global warming. Since the fossil fuels are limited in supply, scientists, environmentalists and policy makers have been striving to find the alternative sources of energy, which are replenishable, easily available, non-polluting, non-detrimental to the health of humans, environmental friendly and do not cause global warming. Isn’t it beneficial for us to explore and deploy the alternative energy sources? I strongly feel that we must develop technology to commercially exploit the alternative energy sources. Some of the types of alternative energy sources along with their utility to humanity are highlighted in the following discussion. Discussion Different definitions of alternative energy have been given by different thinkers and organizations. Economy Watch reported that Material Management Services defined it â€Å"as an alternative for the renewable energy forms,† which has â€Å"not been extracted from fossil fuels. † Further, as defined by Natural Resources Defense Council, Economy Watch stated that alternative energy is peripheral and environmental-friendly. According to Economy Watch, Responding to Climate Change 2007 has defined alternative energy as the one â€Å"that is drawn from the untraditional sources of energy like winds, compressed natural gases, hydroelectricity and solar sources. † When different definitions are merged, the complete meaning of alternative energy sources becomes evident. At the same time, in last day of this section, I realized about my learning along with my understanding level about topic. It facilitated me to perform better in this field (Chen, et al., 2015). Personal Development In week third, I increased my knowledge regarding the design think theories in a systematic manner. This week is more important than the last section because in this class, tutor delivered the products information that will be supportive in blog writing. At the same time, I learned about many theories related to designing thinking such as divergent and convergent thinking, action research, learning theory, the logic of reasoning, and co-creation (see blog#3, 26 July, 2017). These theories help to write relevant and unique write of the blog. I gained my awareness about the basic reasoning pattern that was supportive to solve the problem in an appropriate manner (Creswell, 2013). I developed my consciousness about the Inductive reasoning, abductive reasoning, and deductive reasoning. The inductive reasoning is used to address and develop a possible hypothesis regarding the task. It can support to eliminate the task issue in an appropriate manner. The abductive reasoning is used to identify a way of desired value will be achieved. Along with that, deductive reasoning supported to verify the hypothesis in an appropriate manner. At the same time, such kinds of knowledge improved my professional skills and personal life in long-term (Ioannidis, et al., 2014). In this week, I also presented my blog on the front of the class that was a very embracing experience for me because I was very nervous at the time of presenting my blog. But, when I completed my presentation then my tutor gave a positive feedback that was unexpected for me because as an engineering background I choose a totally different area (see blog#4, August 3, 2017). At the same time, from the discussion with classmates, I understood some special features about my personality named quickly learn anything and deeply understand any topic (Khan, 2014). In this week, I gained my familiarity regarding design problems as well as design tools to eliminate the problem of design in an appropriate manner. Additionally, there are certain tools that are tools of design thinking such as brainstorming, spotting the obvious, and visualization. These tools play a significant role in the problem finding systematically. I also learned about design thinking process to solve the issues in an appropriate manner. The knowledge regarding the tools supports me to create a depth understanding about the problem-solving. I also learned about visualization activities that support to attract blog writing (Ko, 2013). Knowledge management In week fifth, I created my understanding about the Journey mapping, value chain and value network, and mind mapping to design the research in an appropriate manner. In journey mapping, I developed my knowledge regarding graphics presentation which was beneficial to me for expressing the experience of consumers towards goods and services. Three major components are considered such as the establishment of existing experience, visualize possible experience, and visualize prototype of new ideas (see blog #5, August 11, 2017). In Journey mapping, some steps are considered such as choosing the consumer, graphically represent the view regarding the expectations of customers for any particular product and services, and then determine the small number of consumers, conducting an interview, and determine themes. At the same time, I also gained my understanding about adding value which would be effective for me to deliver added value in a business process (from raw material to finished goods) (Kratochwill, et al., 2013). I also increased my understanding about generic value chain where two activities are significant such as primary and support activities. Primary activity includes inbound logistics, operation, outbound logistics, outbound, marketing and sales, and services. Beside this, support activities include firm infrastructure, human resources management, technology development, and procurement. I also learned about the way of creating the Mindmap. These kinds of information are supportive for me to improve my personality due to enhancing my knowledge in various sectors (Kratochwill, et al., 2013). In week sixth, I gained my understanding of various important tools of research such as research approaches, data types, data sources, and ethics that can be effective to groom my personal as well as professional life in an appropriate manner. In addition, each tool was effective in designing due to performing the task in an appropriate manner (see blog#6, August 24, 2017). The depth understanding about research design can support to collect the data in an appropriate manner. The whole process is used for designing interview structure and assesses ethical issues (Lewis, 2015). In week seventh, I learned about the concept development, assumption testing, and rapid prototyping. It will be helpful in effective blog writing in long term. The first activity is based on the concept development where I gained my awareness about the development of the concept in an appropriate manner. I addition to this, second activity is relied on the assumption testing wherein tutors deliver the information regarding hypothesis. In this way, the researcher can accept or reject the assumption on the basis of gathered information to obtain the accurate outcome. Last activity is based on the rapid prototyping that was also supportive in design thinking process (see blog #7, August 30, 2017). In the rapid prototyping, I learned how to build prototype promptly in an appropriate manner. Therefore, I realized that knowledge of such activities can support to make an effective decision-making process (McGivern, 2013). In week eight, I learned about some different kinds of approaches that can be essential in launching innovation. I also developed my understanding about the launch readiness wherein two factors are important such as planning purpose and content of launch readiness. In this week, I also collected feedback on prototype and storyboard. The feedback was supportive to decline the issues in an appropriate manner. At the same time, I also learned that launch planning can consider some factors such as the goal of goods and service, the hypothesis that will be tested in future, tools and techniques, financial requirement, and remember the whole cycle process of design (see blog#8, September 8, 2017). In addition to this, it can also be said that this week was more important than other because here I collected many feedbacks on my prototype and storyboard from group members that can support to refine my skills and work in future (Neuman, 2016). In week ninth, I increased my awareness about some components named marketing, target market, competitor analysis, 4Ps of marketing, entrepreneurial marketing campaign, and design as communication. These factors are significant in designing of an entrepreneurial marketing campaign. In the competitors analysis, I learned that competitors can be different named direct, indirect, and future competitors. In the direct competition, business offers similar product and services while in case of indirect business competition, business offers the substitute product to the customers. The future competitors are neither direct nor indirect completion but it can occur anytime (Vurdien, 2013). I also learned about the different kinds of communication channels such as digital, direct, social media, word of mouth, traditional media, and partners. It will be supportive to directly communicate with consumers as well as support to make a favorable relationship with customers in long-term (see blog #9, September 13, 2017). It can improve my communication skills that build my personality in an upcoming period (Nuttin, 2014). In the tenth week, I increased my understanding of design entrepreneurial fundraising campaigns. I learned about some different elements such as fundraising and sources of finance for entrepreneurial endeavors and innovations. Other factors are fundraising campaigns, and role of finance, and resource requirements, long-term plan, recommendations and time frame. I learned that organization can use two kinds of financial sources such as Internal and external (see blog #10, September 22, 2017). I also learned about the advantages as well as disadvantages of fundraising sources. I also learned about the crowdfunding that was supportive to collect the money or fund from the public in an appropriate manner (Qi-yuan, 2013). In week eleventh, I presented my whole information which I have learned during first to the tenth week. In this week, designers groom their personality and skills due to providing an attractive and relevant presentation regarding the blog in an appropriate manner (see blog #11, September 30, 2017). At the same time, it can also be said that each designer provided the presentation on their topic that was quite complex for each one but that was good because of availability of relevant information (Rahim, 2014). This is the last week of activity, where I gained my understanding regarding the future scope of design. The wider applicability of design thinking, design thinking in established organizations, re-design an industry, growth and strategy, design for growth, and continuous design (see blog #12, October 4, 2017). These factors show the future growth of design (Reybold, et al., 2013). SWOT (Personal strength and weakness) There are different kinds of features about my personality that are analyzed by the analysis of SWOT. In the SWOT analysis, four factors are considered such as strengths, weakness, opportunity, and threat. It is an appropriate technique to appropriately analysis your positive as well as negative qualities. The strengths and weaknesses are considered in the internal factors while opportunities and threats are considered in external factors (Schwartz-Shea, et al., 2013).The following table shows the SWOT: Strengths Active Listener Easily learn New Things Weaknesses Lack of patience Lack of confidence Opportunities Easily learning ability provides a beneficial position among the competitors. Threats Lack of patience can create a problem for solving the issues and completing the task in an appropriate manner. Conclusion From the above analysis, it can be concluded that the innovation and entrepreneurship plays an important role in design due to simply complete the task in an appropriate manner. In addition, it can also summarize that the personal development and knowledge management can support to improve professional life systematically. Finally, it can be illustrated that SWOT is the best way of analyzing personal strength and weakness successfully. Action Plan for improving my skills The effective action plan can be important to improve my confidence level as well as patience level in the specified time.
